I'm writing from the other side of our UIA Fall Convening in Indianapolis, grateful, energized, and thinking about what makes this network work.
Over three days, liaisons, fellows, and campus partners came together not just to talk, but to build. As one fellow put it, it felt less like a conference and more like "a workshop to build something we'll actually do." We welcomed Temple and USC, pushed each other on what's next, and deepened our shared commitment to student success.
What struck me most was the trust in the room. The willingness to be both vulnerable and bold. That's the life of this network.

To everyone who made this gathering and all of our collaborative work in 2025 possible: thank you. Your voice and commitment are why I'm more confident than ever that we're not just imagining a better future for students. We're building it together.
Wishing you rest, comfortable clothing, no alarm clock, and good company this Thanksgiving. And if you need it, I also wish for you a well-timed pivot from an awkward conversation ;)
With gratitude,
Network Updates
- Twenty university presidents and provosts gathered during the APLU Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, for our UIA Board Dinner on November 9, which Temple University graciously co-hosted at the Union Memorial League. The evening was filled with energy and collaboration as leaders aligned on the UIA’s shared priorities and forward-looking initiatives to chart exciting new directions for our Alliance and to strengthen collective efforts to tackle emerging challenges and seize new opportunities in support of student success.
- UMass Amherst recently wrapped up a six-week process mapping cohort led by UIA Fellow Kelly Gray and UIA Central’s Miranda Milovich. Staff from 12 offices learned to map and improve processes to better serve students. Spearheaded by UIA Liaison Carolyn Bassett, this initiative highlights how institutions can build a culture of continuous improvement by equipping staff with the tools and training to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
- The UIA remains committed to our student success mission and is now expanding our work. For 2026, the Network is focusing on three key priorities to accelerate the shift from learning to implementation. UIA Liaisons met this month to discuss:
- Advance College Choice Redesign: Deepen understanding of student decision-making to better influence those choices.
- Strengthen Cross-Campus Collaboration: Enhance data quality and expedite the adoption of evidence-based practices across institutions.
- Sharpen Institutional Metrics: Improve tracking of progress across student success, career readiness, and equitable outcomes.
The overarching goal is to align campuses around shared insights and move rapidly toward tangible results.
