Farshid Hajir

Senior Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education

Farshid Hajir currently serves as Senior Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education at UMass Amherst. In this role, he oversees the educational infrastructure of the undergraduate program, including the Registrar's Office, the Office of Student Success, the Office of Career & Professional Development, the Learning Resources Center & Office of Undergraduate Research and Studies, and the Community Education & Service Learning program. He acts as a Provost’s Office liaison to the Faculty Senate, serving on the Academic Matters Council, the Undergraduate Education Council, the General Education Council, the Policy Committee, and several other councils and committees. He has been at UMass Amherst since 2002, and has served as Senior Vice Provost since 2017. He was appointed to the role of Dean of Undergraduate Education in 2022, in which capacity he works daily with the leadership of the university at the highest level, including the Provost and other Vice Chancellors. As a past winner of the university Distinguished Teaching award, he calls on his experiences as a professor, academic advisor, undergraduate program director, associate head, and head of the Department of Mathematics & Statistics to ground his daily work with students, faculty, and staff in supporting the education of undergraduate students. Farshid obtained AB and PhD degrees in mathematics at Princeton and MIT, respectively. Before arriving at UMass Amherst, he had postdoctoral positions at Caltech and UCLA, a tenure-track position at Cal State University-San Marcos, and a visiting assistant professor position at UNC-Chapel Hill.
