Stephen Freeland

Interim Vice Provost and Dean for the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs
Steve currently serves as the Interim Vice Provost and Dean for the Division of Undergraduate Academic Affairs at UMBC, after 3 years of prior service as associate dean. This division of staff and faculty  deliver academic programming and associated support for student engagement and success for all undergraduate students at UMBC. His commitment to UIA, and to student success in general, draws direct inspiration from academic advising, teaching and mentoring undergraduates and graduates in his chosen field of computational biology. He has also developed UMBC's first degree completion program, and other initiatives to explore, understand and enhance undergraduate student success in a post-COVID UMBC.

Dr. Freeland holds a Ph.D. in genetics from Cambridge University. Prior to his Ph.D., he received a M.S. in biological computation at the University of York and a B.A. in zoology at Oxford University. In recent years, Freeland’s individual scientific research has been complemented by increasing work with federal and philanthropic funding agencies to form and develop interdisciplinary teams of scientists. His commitment to this work extends both nationally (e.g. facilitating NASA and the NSF collaboration to develop new, co-funding models) and internationally (from chairing a Gordon Research Conference to developing international cohorts of early career scientists at the interface of biological, chemical, physical and engineering sciences.)
